Overview

The Logic, History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (LHPST) master program provides a general training focused on all the problems related to the theory of knowledge and of scientific knowledge in particular. It covers the fields of the history of science and technology, the general philosophy of science, the philosophy of the various scientific disciplines (philosophy of formal sciences, philosophy of natural sciences, philosophy of human sciences ...), as well as the study of the relationship between science and society.

It is co-accredited with the Department of Philosophy of the University of Lyon 3.

The first year is a year of general training shared with the Contemporary Philosophy program within the Philosophy Master. However, under the guidance of their tutor at ENS de Lyon, students must choose the optional courses of this common core that will enable them to prepare for the year of specialization of Master 2. This first year is nevertheless compatible with the parallel objective of preparing a CAPES (high school teaching diploma) in philosophy.

Most of the M2 specialization courses take place in the co-accredited institution, the Université de Lyon 3. Thanks to a set of options, this second year leaves the possibility of following individualized courses of study by privileging certain sectors of the history and philosophy of science and technology. Most teachings are concentrated in the autumn semester (S3), so that the last semester (S4), which nevertheless includes some teaching, is more focused on the initiation to professional research (via the preparation of a master thesis and its public defense as well as the participation to research events and structures).
The training is primarily directed at students with a bachelor degree in Philosophy or in other areas of specialization within the "Human and Social Sciences" field, ideally with a complementary scientific background (students with an initial course of studies in Science reorienting towards philosophy or with a Scientific High School diploma). It is also open to students holding a bachelor degree in the "Science, Technology, Health" field who wish to complement their training with a study of the different approaches to the phenomenon of scientific knowledge represented in the master degree. Finally, it also welcomes students trained in the various scientific fields at the undergraduate level who wish to complement or extend this scientific training with a more philosophical and historical education.
