Overview

The program History, archaeology and literature of medieval Christian and Muslim worlds aims at:

  • Promoting the practice of interdisciplinarity between history, archaeology and literature, but also between these disciplines and anthropology, sociology, law.
  • Developing the comparison between the Christian and Muslim worlds, from the end of antiquity to the beginning of modern times, to avoid trainee-researchers restricting themselves to a geographical area or to a restricted chronological timeframe.
  • Guaranteeing the acquisition of professional skills, through research training and solid technical preparation: field archaeology, computer graphics, Medieval Latin and Arabic, paleography, diplomatic, codicology, techniques used in ecdotics, statistical analysis, graphic and cartographic processing of serial data, introduction to law, liturgy, and reading of images.

Students are encouraged to choose their different lectures from the courses offered by ENS de Lyon and the co-accredited institutions.
In the first year Master’s degree (Master’s 1), courses are given at ENS de Lyon on the sources of the history of the Christian Western world. An introduction to certain technical elements such as diplomatic or medieval paleography is also possible. In the second year, the program features an introduction to sources edition, from the transcription of unpublished archival documents.
