Overview
Paris Fashion School by PSL (École Nationale de Mode et Matière, or ENAMOMA-PSL) was jointly established by three institutions affiliated with PSL: Dauphine - PSL, MINES Paris - PSL, and EnsAD (École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs).
This master's degree is part of the PSL graduate program in Management.
Design, engineering and management in service of ecodesign
The aim of the Fashion & Materials program is to bring together a wide range of disciplines to support the environmental and social transition of the fashion and materials industry. The course seeks to produce students who are open and responsive to the many issues involved. They are invited to come up with suggestions that will help to transform practices.
The program has been designed as a platform for interdisciplinary experimentation, providing an opportunity to pool expertise in different areas and interact with the industry and civil society. The master’s degree program provides a forum in which students, research professors and industry professionals can move around and make connections. The modular approach enables students to join the program for a single course, a block of courses, a year or the full two-year master’s degree.
The decision to bring together “materials” and “fashion” is key to the program’s approach: recent progress in materials science and engineering puts textiles at the forefront of technology, and materials are central to the environmental transition. The master’s degree aims to give materials a primary role in user-oriented fashion design, which can be applied in fields from ready-to-wear to the luxury segment, as well as technical textiles and textiles for healthcare.
Learning outcomes
The master’s degree in Fashion & Materials gives students the opportunity to supplement their original field of expertise by learning about related areas of knowledge and acquiring a methodology for analyzing issues in all their complexity. The program has been designed to serve as a forum where students, teachers, researchers and industry professionals can come together as they develop their skills in design, engineering and management. Students will learn how to interact with the professional world and become a driving force in tackling the challenges of the environmental and social transition.
The educational model has been shaped by a number of formative choices:
- An emphasis on the challenges of an environmental and social transition, with dedicated seminars in Block 1 and the inclusion of associated considerations as part of all projects.
- An openness to interdisciplinary issues with a view to acquiring broader scientific knowledge.
- An approach which gives materials a primary role in user-centered fashion, with applications in fields ranging from mass retail clothing to the luxury sector, as well as technical work clothing and textiles used in healthcare.
- A focus on exploratory projects and promoting awareness of research that offers an opportunity to reflect on transforming practices.
- A more personalized approach to education, with academic, professional and international tutors to support work on individual and group projects.
- Teaching delivered in English and use of French at students’ discretion for interactions with each other and with the local ecosystem.
The public display of projects held at the end of each year in September is an important time, allowing students to present and defend their projects before a larger audience.
Structure
A customizable track
Students can enter the master's program in their first or second year. Courses are given in English and are organised in blocks :
Block 0 – Fundamentals of management, fashion and materials (3 weeks)
• Business basics in cultural and creative industries
• Basics in fashion design and materials
Block 1 - Ecodesign of resources, materials and processes (10 weeks)
• Fashion & materials in questions (I)
• Sustainability behind the scenes
• Ecodesign workshop
• Natural fibers and dyes workshop
Block 2 – Exploration methods(10 weeks)
• Fashion & materials in questions (II)
• Value proposition design
• Fablab workshop
• Research methodologies
• Dissertation
• Fashion tech workshop
• Workwear workshop
Block 3 – Inter-school project (10 weeks) brings together in interdisciplinary teams students from several PSL programs. They work part-time on an exploration project proposed by an organization. Each group prepares a professional-level report, with the support of a tutor and regular progress reviews with each partner organization.
Block 4 – Professional experience (2 to 7 months) aims to develop professional experience: internship, experience in an entrepreneurial environment, research laboratory, etc...in France or abroad. For apprenticeship students, the professional experience extends beyond block 4.
Block 5 – Exploratory project (6 to 8 months). This block focus on the development of a personal or collaborative exploration project.
Each student chooses a set of blocks according to his or her previous academic background and professional project. It can leads to four training paths:
- « Creation » : blocks 0+1+2+3+4+5 to follow complete training course at the heart of the Fashion & Materials programme (two-year course, design profiles only)
- « Explorations » : blocks 0+1+2+3 to acquire fundamental skills for the development of exploration projects (one-year course, all profiles)
- « Transformations » : blocks 0+1+5 understanding of evolutions in the sector (one-year course, all profiles)
- « Proposition » : blocks 0+4+5 to focus on the development of a project (one-year course, all profiles)
International students
The PSL Welcome Desk offers individualized support to international students before and during their arrival (advice on administrative procedures: housing, visas, residence permits, health, transportation, etc.) to facilitate their settlement in Paris. Numerous cultural events are offered throughout the year to facilitate their integration within the PSL University.
