About this course
Bioethics is a field that studies ethical challenges that arise in health care, public health and the life sciences. It thinks about and responds to social concerns about issues including engineering, migrant or prisoner health, animal experimentation, and ethical challenges in clinical medicine.
Who is it for?
You don’t have to come from a medical or health background to study bioethics. Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, such as philosophy, humanities, social science, law, science, medicine, nursing, allied health professions, psychology and health management.
Structure
What you’ll study
As part of our Graduate Diploma in Bioethics, you will complete:
- 1 x core unit - Introduction to Ethical Reasoning
- 2 x units from Part 1 of the Unit of Study Table
- 1 x unit from Part 1 or Part 2 of the Unit of Study Table
Candidates may apply to the Program Director for approval to complete BETH5000, or a suitable alternative, if they are unable to complete the core unit of study BETH5101 Introduction to Ethical Reasoning because of scheduling issues.

Admissions
Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Bioethics requires:
- a bachelors degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification in the field of science, medicine, nursing, allied health sciences, philosophy/ethics, sociology, anthropology, history, law or other relevant field.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.5 in each band
A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 20 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 22 in Writing
A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 61 in each band
