About this course
This course has a special emphasis on diversity in the language of professional and social engagement. Learn core concepts of language and culture, and gain skills in applying them in areas ranging from business to education, community relations, media, medicine, and law.

- gain experience and skills in professional practice relating to the application of cross-cultural and linguistic knowledge and skills
- pursue research as a foundation for higher degree research.
Structure
What you’ll study
This program offers exciting opportunities to deepen your knowledge of linguistics and cross-cultural communication, and develop new skills as you put this knowledge into practice.
Analyse the forms and functions of language, both spoken and written, and study how language connects with visual contexts – gesture, image, film and sound, and digital platforms. You will develop a critical awareness of the connections between language, culture and society.
You will complete four units of study (24 credit points), including 12 credit points of core units of study (two units from these options):
- LNGS7505 Structure and Function of Language
- LNGS7002 Language, Society and Power
- LNGS7506 Discourse and Communication
- LNGS7006 Cross Cultural Communication

Admissions
Admission requires a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
