About this course
Drawing on the latest research, this program investigates the theoretical basis of key issues relating to sociocultural contexts of second language education. You will acquire new insights that you can apply to daily practice.
Who is it for?
This program is designed to develop and support the careers of teaching professionals, education leaders, researchers and policymakers. Note that it does not, in itself, lead to a professional teaching qualification.
Structure
What you’ll study
To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (TESOL) you must complete 6 units of study (36 credit points), including:
- a minimum of 4 units of study (24 credit points) of core units; and
- a minimum of 1 unit of study (6 credit points) of elective units; plus
- a maximum of 1 unit of study (6 credit points) of postgraduate Education units which can be chosen from any designation within the Master of Education program

Admissions
Admission to candidature requires:
- a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification and either a postgraduate English language teaching qualification or at least two years full-time English language teaching experience; or
- a bachelor's degree in English language teaching or equivalent qualification and at least one year full-time English language teaching experience.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
A minimum result of 61 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
