About this course
Our course has been designed by critical care clinicians for doctors interested in emergency medicine, anaesthetics and intensive care medicine. Students will have a range of subjects to choose from as they develop skills in teaching, simulation and research.
Who is it for?
Our Graduate Diploma in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine) is tailored to doctors and medical practitioners and is primarily designed to inform and update clinicians on current, practices, debates and research in critical care.
Structure
What you’ll study
Clinical and academic leaders will help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to become a well-rounded, informed and analytical clinician. Coursework is provided in anatomy, pathology, physiology and pharmacology to help you prepare for college barrier examinations.
In anaesthetics and intensive care medicine, you can pursue highly coveted expertise in neuromonitoring, pain management, mechanical ventilation or extracorporeal life support. If emergency medicine is your interest, you may choose coursework in retrieval medicine, point of care ultrasound or clinical reasoning and communication.
You will complete up of 36 credit points of study including:
- 6 credit points of compulsory units of study;
- 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
- 6 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.
Our Graduate Diploma in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine) is offered through our interactive online learning environment, giving you the flexibility to tailor your study schedule around your lifestyle.
Most stream specific units are online (100 % online). You may find a couple of electives have a face-to-face component. These can be avoided depending on your individual preferences.

Admissions
Admission to this course requires:
- a medical degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification
- current medical registration in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction
- current or prior employment as a medical practitioner in a clinical setting in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.5 in each band
A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 20 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 22 in Writing
A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 61 in each band
