About this course
This course has a special emphasis on diversity in the language of professional and social engagement. Learn core concepts of language and culture, and gain skills in applying them in areas ranging from business to education, community relations, media, medicine, and law.

Structure
What you’ll study
Analyse the forms and functions of language, both spoken and written, and study how language connects with visual contexts – gesture, image, film and sound – and digital platforms. You will develop a critical awareness of the connections between language, culture and society.
Gain experience and skills in professional practice relating to the application of crosscultural linguistic knowledge and skills, and pursue research as a foundation for higher research degrees.
You will complete:
- 4 core units (24 credit points):
- Structure and Function of Language
- Language, Society and Power
- Discourse and Communication
- Cross Cultural Communication; and
- 4 electives (24 credit points)

Admissions
Admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma in Crosscultural and Applied Linguistics requires:
- a bachelor’s degree or higher award from the University of Sydney, or a qualification deemed by the faculty to be equivalent; or
- completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate certificate in this discipline or qualifications deemed by the faculty to be equivalent.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
