Overview

About this course

This unique program will allow you to build a strong technical education in human visual perception, methods for quantifying light, lighting technologies and sustainability with an added specialisation in sustainable design.

Who is it for?

This program is tailored for design and related built-environment professionals who wish to extend their expertise in lighting, and for graduates of the Bachelor of Architecture and Environments and Bachelor of Design in Architecture.

Structure

What you’ll study

Primary stream: Illumination Design

Throughout this course, you will learn how architectural lighting design shapes the visual environment experienced by building occupants. By specifying light sources and control systems, determining their spatial arrangement, and considering the interaction between light and materials, you will discover how to influence the function and aesthetics of architectural spaces.

Secondary stream: Sustainable design

Through interdisciplinary access to our leading academic researchers and laboratories, the Sustainable Design stream emphasises the knowledge and critical thinking skills that will enable students to adapt to—and lead—future changes in our built environment. Our ‘first principles’ approach enables you not just to perform energy analyses and building assessments, but also to critique and develop further the tools and approaches required for sustainable building.

Opportunities

Your research-leading lecturers take you on site visits and expose you to a range of international collaborators. We leverage our extensive links with industry to bring you internship opportunities with leading businesses and consultancies. You can use a wide range of electives to pursue your interests in the application of sustainable design theories and methods in architecture, planning, urban design, building services and facilities management.
