About this course
Bioethics is a field that studies ethical challenges that arise in health care, public health and the life sciences. It thinks about and responds to social concerns about issues including engineering, migrant or prisoner health, animal experimentation, and ethical challenges in clinical medicine.
Who is it for?
You don’t have to come from a medical or health background to study bioethics. Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, such as philosophy, humanities, social science, law, science, medicine, nursing, allied health professions, psychology and health management.
Structure
What you’ll study
In our Master of Bioethics, you will study a postgraduate coursework degree with leading scholars in the field of bioethics. Our faculty members, based at Sydney Health Ethics, have a wide range of expertise, research interests, and professional backgrounds. We are made up of sociologists, pharmacists, public health experts, philosophers, historians, and medical doctors. Among other units of study that we offer, you will be able to take:

- Moral Theory with Dr Diego Silva
- Philosophy of Health with Associate Professor Claire Hooker
- Bioethics in Society with Professor Ainsley Newson
- Research Ethics with Associate Professor Tamra Lysaght
- Methods of Bioethics with Dr Kathryn MacKay
To be awarded the degree, you will complete core units in moral theory, philosophy of medicine and applied ethics, and will finish with a capstone project. Students with a credit average in four Core and Part 1 coursework units (refer to unit of study table below) are eligible to complete their degree via the research pathway.
This course meets the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) continuing professional development standards.

Admissions
Admission to the Master of Bioethics requires:
- a bachelor's degree with a credit average from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification in the field of science, medicine, nursing, allied health sciences, philosophy/ethics, sociology, anthropology, history, law or other relevant fields; or
- completion of the requirements of an embedded graduate certificate or graduate diploma or equivalent qualification.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.5 in each band
A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 20 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 22 in Writing
A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 61 in each band
