About this course
Develops the knowledge and expertise needed to successfully face the challenges of English language teaching in second language contexts. Using the latest research and pedagogy, this program explores key theoretical and practical issues of importance to English language teachers in various contexts.
Who is it for?
The Master of Education (TESOL) will develop your professional expertise and knowledge in the areas of English language education whether you are or are aspiring to become an English language teacher of children, adolescents or adults.
Structure
What you’ll study
The Master of Education (TESOL) is a postgraduate coursework degree that will develop your professional expertise and understanding in the areas of English language teaching to children, adolescents, or adults.
You will complete core units that cover key areas of English language teaching and learning, such as how a second language is acquired and how English can be taught effectively. You will also complete a capstone experience comprising either a semester-long special project or a dissertation.
Additionally, you will complete TESOL electives as needed to meet the course requirements.

Admissions
Admission to candidature for the Master of Education (TESOL) requires:
- a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification and either a postgraduate English language teaching qualification or at least two years full-time English language teaching experience; or
- a bachelor's degree in English language teaching or equivalent qualification and at least one year's full-time English language teaching experience.
If you do not meet the requirements listed above for direct entry to the Master’s degree, you may be able to enter via a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the same subject area and upgrade to the Master’s after successful completion of the shorter course.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
A minimum result of 61 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
