About this course
Our Master of Health Policy and Planning will provide you with a detailed and practical understanding of health systems and the policy-making process.
It offers a strong and explicit focus on health policy, moving beyond administration and management to progress early-mid public service careers.
Who is it for?
Our course is designed for those who are engaged or planning a career in health policy wishing to extend their knowledge in health services, policymaking, leadership or conceptual modelling, as well as health practitioners who are interested in strategic decision making and systems thinking.
Structure
What you’ll study
Our Master of Health Policy and Planning is a postgraduate coursework degree that will give you a comprehensive and practical understanding of policymaking, including systems thinking, economic evaluation, health financing and budgets, power, politics and agenda setting, and the critical use of evidence.
You will complete core units in health policy, health policy planning and health economics, including a health policy project unit. Additionally you will complete elective units in global and public health, or from other subject areas with approval from the course coordinator.

Admission to this course requires:
- a bachelor's degree with first or second class honours from the University of Sydney, or equivalent qualification and a minimum of 1 year of work experience in a health or policy related field; or
- completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate certificate; or
- completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate diploma, or equivalent qualification.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
A minimum result of 61 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
