About this course

This course builds on the knowledge gained during the Master of Medicine (Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy), allowing high-achieving students to plan and carry out a supervised research project.

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for psychiatry registrars, CMOs and psychiatrists, general practitioners or other medical practitioners who wish to develop a career in psychotherapy. It has been designed to meet the needs of clinicians for training in psychotherapy and trauma-informed care.

Structure

What you’ll study

In this advanced stream, students complete a research project in an area of specific interest to them and their master's degree. On completion of the advanced project, students will be able to plan and execute a substantial research project and prepare a scholarly work which may be a paper for publication.

The Master of Medicine (Advance) (Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy), requires the completion of 60 credit points of units of study including:

  • 48 credit points which are credited based on the successful completion of the Master of Medicine (Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy); and
  • 12 credit points of project units of study. 

Students will have opportunities to:

  • Develop high levels of knowledge and appropriate skills in investigating Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PDP) and Trauma-Informed process and outcome and in assessing the impact of trauma in patients presenting with mental health issues. 
  • Learn to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams on the practical challenges faced by professionals working in these areas.
  • Acquire skills recognised as essential components of the professional training in psychotherapy practice and research. 
  • Learn to critically evaluate relevant research and contribute to the growing body of evidence-based, effective interventions.

Qualifications

Admission to the Master of Medicine (Advanced) (Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy) requires a medical degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification, and:

  • a minimum of 12 months’ experience in a clinical area related to mental health
  • current professional indemnity insurance to practise psychotherapy in Australia; and
  • satisfactory performance at an interview as required.

For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
