About this course
Our Master of Medicine (Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy) teaches an approach that helps people with personality or anxiety disorders, dysthymia, post-traumatic disorders, chronic depression, somatisation and other conditions in which trauma is a contributing factor.
Who is it for?
Our course is suitable for psychiatry registrars, CMOs and psychiatrists, general practitioners or other medical practitioners who wish to develop a career in psychotherapy. It has been designed to meet the needs of clinicians for training in psychotherapy and trauma-informed care.
Structure
What you’ll study
You will complete 48 units of study comprising of:
- 12 credit points of compulsory units of study;
- 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
- 12 credit points of stream-specific or general elective units of study.
The degree comprises of coursework, supervised clinical work and a capstone experience of the scholarly creation of a paper suitable for publication.
Capstone experience
A capstone experience comprises two units of study designed to provide students with an opportunity to draw together the learning that has taken place during the award, synthesise this with their prior learning and experience, and draw conclusions that will form the basis for further investigation, and intellectual and/or professional growth.

Admissions
Admission to the Master of Medicine (Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy) requires a medical degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification, and:
- a minimum of 12 months’ experience in a clinical area related to mental health
- current professional indemnity insurance to practise psychotherapy in Australia; and
- satisfactory performance at an interview as required.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.5 in each band
A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 20 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 22 in Writing
A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 61 in each band
