About this course
Our course has been designed by critical care clinicians for students interested in emergency medicine, anaesthetics and intensive care medicine. Students will have a range of subjects to choose from as they develop skills in teaching, simulation and research.

Our Master of Science in Medicine (Critical Care Medicine) is for students looking to develop the knowledge and skills needed to become more well-rounded, informed and analytical healthcare professionals.
Structure
What you’ll study
Clinical and academic leaders will help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to become a well-rounded, informed and analytical clinician. This degree offers insights, challenges and education into new and rapidly changing advances for all clinicians considering further qualifications and specialisation in any health career.
In anaesthetics and intensive care medicine, you can pursue highly coveted expertise in neuromonitoring, pain management, mechanical ventilation or extracorporeal life support. If emergency medicine is your interest, you may choose coursework in retrieval medicine, point of care ultrasound or clinical reasoning and communication.
There is a wide range of subject areas to choose from and you can develop valuable non-technical skills in teaching, simulation and research.
You will complete:
- 2 x compulsory units of study
- 4 x stream specific units of study
- 2 x stream specific or general elective units
This course is offered through our interactive online learning environment, giving you the flexibility to tailor your study schedule around your lifestyle.
Most stream specific units are online (100 % online). You may find a couple of electives have a face-to-face component. These can be adjusted depending on your individual preferences.

Qualifications
Admission to this course requires:
- successful completion of an embedded degree program (graduate certificate or graduate diploma) with a minimum credit average; or
- a bachelor's degree in a health or science-related discipline; or
- a bachelor's degree plus a postgraduate degree in a health or science-related discipline.
- current registration as a nurse (Registered Nurse (Division 1)) or current registration as a paramedic with AHPRA in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction.
Applicants must also provide evidence of at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
