About this course

Our Master of Surgery will allow you to pursue your interests and develop knowledge and skills in surgical specialty areas as well as non-technical areas such as professionalism, leadership and research. 

Who is it for?

Our course is designed for medical graduates, surgical trainees and surgeons who want to prepare for the RACS GSSE, enhance their CV for future career opportunities and acquire knowledge and skills that are valuable for an academic or teaching hospital career.

Structure

What you’ll study

Our Master of Surgery is a postgraduate coursework degree that will enable you to pursue your interests and develop knowledge and skills in surgical specialty areas as well as non-technical areas.

You will complete core and selective surgery units, and you can tailor your degree to focus on:

  • surgical science units in pathology, anatomy and physiology designed to prepare you for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) General Surgical Science Examination (GSSE)
  • research units including the opportunity to complete a dissertation on a research project of your choosing with the aim of future published work
  • specialty units covering a range of technical and non-technical surgical skills and specialty areas
  • a choice of elective subjects which can be selected to complement surgery or research subjects

All students will complete a core capstone unit to develop their individual leadership and professionalism skills within the context of Surgery in Australia.

Qualifications

Admission to this course is on the basis of the following criteria:

  • A medical degree from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification; or
  • successful completion of the requirements of the embedded Graduate Certificate in Surgery or Graduate Certificate in Surgical Sciences or Graduate Diploma in Surgery; and
  • current medical registration in an Australian or New Zealand jurisdiction.

International qualifications

For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
